Our mission is simple: Making new work, while building community, and paying artists equitably.
Since our founding in 2017, we have welcomed over 120 artists and 750 audience members into community at Checkmark, and the best is yet to come.
Our Annual Summer Reading Series:
For two summers and counting, Checkmark has produced a reading series of three, new plays, each written and directed by artists of the global majority. Each play’s creative team is provided with rehearsal space, dramaturgical feedback from the Checkmark Staff, casting assistance, a public presentation for peers and industry professionals, and an hourly rate of $26/hr.
At its best, Checkmark gathers likeminded creatives around new work that pushes boundaries, and provides space where artists are both seen and challenged. Every year, our goal is to expand the community built around this work, and we hope you continue following along!

While developing new work by artists from the global majority, and uplifting the communities at the center of our stories, we also prioritize paying every artist the New York City Living Wage of $26/hour.
One of the many reasons why companies like Checkmark are still necessary today is the lack of fairly compensated job opportunities throughout our industry. We believe the best work is made possible by investing in your collaborators both artistically and financially. So, at Checkmark, we raise the standard of care we have for our artists beyond what is typically seen across arts and entertainment. As a result, we generate lasting collaborations that positively impact both our community and the industry at large.
